Shannon's Wicked Scrubs // INTERVIEW
It takes a moment to dream up an idea. It takes hard work and courage to see it to fruition.
Here to inspire us, Shannon Wanlin is doing just that: she’s giving her dreams a shot with what her husband affectionately has named: Shannon’s Wicked Scrubs—the newest product on Bottoms Up Tanning & Spa’s shelf and excitingly, from one of our own!
Enjoy a look into her thought process with this sweet interview!
WHAT IS SHANNON’S WICKED SCRUBS?
Shannon’s Wicked Scrubs is a scrub for anyone battling with dry skin or who simply wants the label of what they put on their body to represent more naturally based ingredients.
This scrub is full-body meaning you can use it both on your body and on your face. Because it contains specific natural ingredients, it is a natural anti-bacterial, therefore, it’s safe to apply to anywhere on the skin, will not cause infection, and the most it will do in sensitive areas is kill some bad bacteria you don’t want anyways.
Coconut oil is the main ingredient and I use different exfoliators like sugar, salt, dead sea salt, Epsom salt, Himalayan salt and like to have fun with different scents and essential oils.
WHO IS THIS SCRUB FOR?
ANYONE. It’s great for any skin type as coconut oil is good for everyone. I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they have dry skin issues or psoriasis.
This is also good for people with oily skin. Contrary to popular belief, you want to counteract oily skin with good oils. People often think they need to dry out their skin in order to avoid oiliness, but that actually prompts your body to just produce more oil. This is also great for inflammation.
And if you buy this and your husband uses it once, he’ll sneak and use it again. Believe me!
HOW DID YOU COOK THIS UP?
I have psoriasis and needed something to soothe the itchiness. Lotion doesn’t last and you have to reapply. I’m not a re-applier. That’s why I don’t wear lipstick.
But this scrub lasted all day long. I don’t have to reapply my moisturizer and for someone who is supposed to be applying every two hours because of the psoriasis, this is a huge benefit.
You could go to the store and buy coconut oil and rub it on your body, but it’s not the same. Because of the exfoliation element and the scents of my recipe, it helps make you feel clean. That’s important.
I needed it for my skin, but again, it’s a benefit for any skin type no matter the condition it’s in.
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEGINNING TO DEVELOP YOU OWN PRODUCT?
Fun! I’m able to make minor alterations to fit someone’s exact needs. Some people request to not have any salts or sugars in their “scrub,” but rather, use it as a conditioning agent and then some people want specific scents. I can go home and create exactly what they want.
I’m excited about the variations between salts and sugars and different colors!
WHAT DO YOU ENVISION SHANNON’S WICKED SCRUBS TO BECOME AS TIME GOES ON?
Me and my husband were talking about going in different directions. I want to vary my scrub recipes to cater to specific needs in the future. So many things factor into how your skin behaves and I’m hoping to start doing some additional experimentation to best serve the individual buying the jar.
I’ve tried a lot of different things to ensure there isn’t greasiness or staining and that it doesn’t solve one problem, just to create another.
I’m hoping to branch out and not only find different scents, but different exfoliators. I hope to do a candy cane, red and white, vanilla scrub this Christmas!
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE READING THIS WHO HAS IDEAS FOR PRODUCTS LIKE YOUR SCRUB AND NEED SOME ENCOURAGEMENT?
I’d say if it’s a thought you continuously think about, you have to just stop and do it. At least give yourself that opportunity to try it.
The hardest thing was giving my scrubs to someone else to try because the last thing you want to hear is “I could not stand that! I couldn’t get it off my body. How could you stand that?”
I would also say to them—don’t go by anyone else’s process. For me, I didn’t go off of somebody else’s scrub recipe, I just started mixing until I came up with what I needed.
If it’s a thought you have once a day, you have to just try it.
